The campanile of St. Mark’s in Venice, is an imposing square plan tower about 100 metres high, crowned by a spire that was once a lighthouse for shipping. The view from the top is very much looking down on the surrounding roofs. Terra cotta everywhere and not a hint of corrugated iron.

The Desert View Watchtower is a monument to a time, a place and a people. Recognized as a National Historic Landmark, the Watchtower was constructed in 1932. Architect Mary Colter’s design takes its influences from the architecture of the Ancestral Puebloan people of the Colorado Plateau.

This tower is known throughout the world and is much older that the the one on the edge of the Grand Canyon. The tower is the free standing bell tower of the city’s cathedral. It was built over a period of almost 200 years, with construction starting in 1173.
